In any case, the AI will declare surprise war against you if it wants to expand in your direction or has no other target peace civs (Sweden and Georgia in particular) are most likely to do it without any warning or rationale at all. Genghis, Pericles, and Lincoln are the usual offenders, only appeased if you have nothing they want and accidentally fulfill the hidden agenda (or have no cavalry to anger the Mongols). If it does, you need far more than your initial force. The AI typically uses its starting warriors and a few extras, but can decide to spam units nonstop for at least three dozen turns, possibly longer if it develops a tech lead during that period. To defend on flat ground, you need four archers and two warriors. At that level, especially if you want a religion, you're not going to have enough to deter aggression, forward settling, or warfare. I get a sense that most of these suggestions aren't coming from deity players. Tl dr: not possible, but "more than their listed military score and units stationed at every border." Do not underestimate your troops!Įdit: And to actually answer your question, its hard to stop the AI from surprise warring you even when you are way stronger than them, but I have found that 1-2 slingers -> archers with maybe a warrior per border city is more than adequate to dissuade the AI and protect yourself if they do attack. When I first started playing I shied away form militaries, but now I like to have a couple archers and warriors handy at least in the early game to defend and flex into opportunistic attacks if I think it is worth it. You can easily triple your per-turn output in gold, science, faith, and culture with a good unit or two pillaging districts and mines while also slowing your rivals down. There are several techs in the tree that benefit from having a couple extra units, so you can think of it as converting production into science or culture in the long run in addition to protecting you.Īlso, having a moderate military will allow you to run into an enemy's land and pillage. Building at least three archers is a solid defense in the early game and will save you a fair chunk of science later. You need 3 archers to boost machinery, two crossbows for metal casting etc.
